Why your VC fundraising is stalling (and how to fix it with better LP data)

VC fundraising stalls for three main reasons: targeting the wrong LPs, relying on cold outreach only and running an inefficient, manual process. You can solve these issues by using data to build a highly qualified pipeline, systematically mapping paths for warm introductions, and using a CRM to manage the process professionally.

Problem #1: You are targeting the wrong LPs. Why is this happening?

Your fundraising is stalling because you are spending most of your time pitching LPs who were never going to invest. This happens when your “pipeline” is just a long, unqualified list.

  • The symptom: You have a low meeting-to-commitment conversion rate. Lots of initial calls go nowhere.
  • The data-driven fix: You must ruthlessly qualify your LP list before you start outreach. Use a database to filter your list based on critical criteria:
    • Have they invested in first-time funds before?
    • Is your fund size within their typical cheque size range?
    • Do they have a specific mandate for your sector and stage?
  • Answering these questions with data first will eliminate 80% of your unqualified leads and allow you to focus only on high-potential LPs.

Problem #2: You have no warm path for an introduction. Why is this happening?

LPs rely on their trusted networks to filter new opportunities. Cold outreach can work, but having a clear warm plus cold fundraising strategy will be much more effective.

  • The symptom: Your emails and LinkedIn messages get no response.
  • The data-driven fix: For every qualified LP on your short list, you must systematically map your path in. Use data to find a connector - a person in your network (or your team’s network) who has a strong, existing relationship with the target LP. This could be another GP, a portfolio founder, or a service provider. Prioritise the LPs where you have the strongest potential for a warm introduction. For LPs that you don’t have a warm path in, run a cold data-driven outreach campaign.

Problem #3: Your process is inefficient and unprofessional. Why is this happening?

Your process is stalling because you are managing your fundraise from a spreadsheet and your inbox. This leads to missed follow-ups, inconsistent communication, and an inability to see what’s actually working.

  • The symptom: You lose track of conversations, follow-up deadlines slip, and you have no clear view of your overall pipeline health.
  • The data-driven fix: Run your fundraise like a professional sales process using a CRM system.
    • Single source of truth: A CRM tracks every LP interaction, ensuring nothing is missed.
    • Process management: It allows you to manage LPs through clear stages (e.g., “Initial Contact,” “Pitched,” “Due Diligence,” “Closing”).
    • Performance analytics: A CRM provides data on your own process, showing you your conversion rates at each stage and helping you identify and fix bottlenecks.
