Building a data-driven LP pipeline

Building a successful LP pipeline with little or no existing network requires a systematic, data-driven approach. The key is to define your ideal LP persona, use data to qualify a long list of leads, find warm introductions through connectors, while tracking every interaction in a CRM.

What are the steps to building an LP pipeline from scratch?

A data-driven approach turns fundraising from an art into a science. Following these seven steps can build a robust pipeline, even without a deep personal network.

Define your ideal LP persona.

Define who you’re looking for before you start your search. Are they a family office, a high-net-worth individual (HNWI), or an institution? What is their typical cheque size, sector focus and risk appetite? A clear persona focuses your search and saves time.

Generate a long list of potential LPs.

Use public sources and specialised databases to create a broad list of LPs that loosely fit your persona. Sources include regulatory filings, conference attendee lists, and news articles about other fundraises. The goal here is quantity over quality.

Qualify your long list with data.

This is the most critical step. Enrich your long list with data to filter it down to a high-quality short list. Key qualifying questions to answer with data include: Have they invested in first-time funds before? Have they backed VCs with a similar strategy? Are they currently active in the market?

Find the path via connectors.

Once you have a qualified list, do not cold email (yet). Use your data to map your network (and your team’s network) to find a connector, a trusted individual who can provide a warm introduction. The best connectors are often other GPs or successful founders.

Automate outreach to targets without connectors.

If there is no one in your existing network who can be a connector to the target LP, find a way to engage with them cold. The best way is to run a short, targeted outreach campaign on LinkedIn - you will grow your LP network and simultaneously generate warm leads.

Track everything in a CRM.

Every email, call, and meeting must be tracked in a CRM system. This provides a single source of truth for your pipeline, prevents embarrassing double contacts, and allows you to analyse what’s working and what isn’t. Treat fundraising like a sales process.

Iterate and refine your process.

Fundraising is a feedback loop. Use the data from your CRM to analyse your progress. Which types of LPs are responding? Which connectors are most effective? Use this data to continuously refine your ideal LP persona and outreach strategy.
