NewsStruggling to find UK Angel investors? Companies House has them all.
Existing connections or warm introductions are the best way to source investment. But what if you don't have a network yet? Adding an outbound strategy will greatly increase the chances of closing out your round. Here we'll show you how to find out who's actually investing, by using Companies House.
Step 1: Identify what you want from your investors
Start with the basics. Angels can bring a lot more than money to the table, so take time to identify what you want from investors. Whether it's expert advice or client introductions, they can really accelerate the growth of your company.
Step 2: Find similar companies who are further along
Create a list of UK-based companies that operate in a similar industry to your company, removing any direct competitors. This way, when you approach investors, it will be relevant and you'll spend your time more effectively. For example, if you're a FinTech, no use contacting someone who's only ever invested in Real Estate.
Step 3: Find them on Companies House
If their Limited company names aren't on their website directly, you can usually find them tucked away in a Privacy Policy or T&Cs. Once you've got your list, head to Companies House. Search for the company, then hit “Company Filings” and “Confirmation Statements”. Look for the file with the most pages, this will likely contain a list of investors and founders.
Step 4: Create your pipeline
Within these Confirmation Statements, take care to remove those with the largest shareholding, as they're probably the founders. Once that's done, you can start creating your investor pipeline. As you know they've invested in companies similar to yours, when you cold message them, they're much more likely to respond.
Step 5: Use Scribe to save time!
With Scribe, you can get all of this data on Angel investors already sorted for you, by industry and cheque size. Just select the industry you are interested in and a minimum ticket size, and hit search.
Once you’ve got your search results, you can add investors to a bespoke target list. This means that instead of trawling through Companies House to find investors, you’ll be ready to get going 100x faster.
Before messaging, check if you have any mutual connections who can introduce you. Once you’re ready to go, be sure to mention their previous investment in your outreach - this will help to show that you’ve done your research.
Good luck!
